DID YOU GROW UP IN THE SOUTHWEST? - I lived in Perth for most of my life, but my heart was always in the South West. My family had a house in Margaret River for over 10 years, and my best friend and Nan and Pop both lived in Busselton, so I was down here any chance I could get! I now live in Quindalup with my beautiful wife Jas and couldn't be any happier!
DID YOUR PROFESSION EVOLVE FROM SURFING? - In a way it did, as I have always loved the ocean, especially surfing, and I have had a passion for surf photography for a very long time. Ever since I was a kid I remember being fascinated with cameras. My Dad gave me his old Minolta 35mm camera when I was about 10, and from that day I was hooked! My photography has developed a lot since then, and I now focus on Ocean, Surf, Landscape, Wildlife and Abstract photography. I started Southwest Saltwater to give people a little slice of this amazing coastline that I am so blessed to call home, and to give the locals insight as to what the surf was like that day. I am stoked to know that I can give people their own free private beach escape through the daily email with images direct from the South West.
WHAT'S IN YOUR CAMERA BAG? - At the moment I shoot with a Canon 5D Mark 3, a Canon 100-400mm L series lens, a 24-105mm L series lens and a Canon 16-35mm L series lens. I also have an Aquatech Elite 5D3 Water housing with a couple of lens ports / domes to capture the above & under water images.
DESCRIBE A USUAL DAY - The usual day for me starts with the alarm clock going off around 30 minutes before sunrise. From there I quickly check the surf report and weather forecast and make a decision as to which beach I will be heading to. After a couple of hours spent taking photos on one of our many beautiful beaches we have here in the South West, I make my way home to load the images onto my computer and prepare them for sending off in the free daily email for my much loved subscribers. The rest of my day is spent managing the business side of Southwest Saltwater, working my other job as Graphic Designer, and if there's enough time, making my way down to photograph the sunset or surf if there are waves.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST MEMORABLE SHOOT? - I have had a few memorable shoots, but the one that stands out the most for me would have to be photographing from a helicopter above the ASP Drug Aware Margaret River Pro surfing comp. I was in the chopper with the doors off for Kelly Slater and Joel Parkinson's heat and managed to capture some amazing photos of both surfers and the event site.
DREAM LOCATION YET TO VISIT - Hawaii has been a place that I have always wanted to travel to. The place looks like a surfer and photographers dream destination!
WHERE CAN WE SEE AND BUY YOUR IMAGES - I currently have two exhibitions running at the moment, one at the newly renovated Artezen Cafe in Dunsborough Town (which is now open for dinner!), and the other at Clairault Streicker Winery (off caves road in Wilyabrup). You can also visit the website to purchase any of my images in a variety of print formats, and while you're there you can subscribe to the free daily email!
FAVOURITE SOUTH WEST BEACH - So hard to choose as I love them all, but if I had to I would say Boodjidup Beach in Margaret River.
FAVOURITE CAFE - Artezen Cafe! Great food, great coffee and run by the local legend Ryan!
FAVOURITE TOWN - Dunsborough for sure!
